Ceramic band heaters from KMT Heiztechnik are robust ceramic-based contact heating elements — made in Austria, in-house since 1987. With operating temperatures up to 450 °C and watt densities up to 6.5 W/cm², they take over where mica reaches its limits.

The robust solution
for high temperatures.
When temperature, watt density or mechanical stress exceed what mica can handle, ceramic band heaters take over. They too are made in-house to customer drawing — from single units to series production.
At the core is a NiCr resistance wire, form-fitted into ceramic blocks. The ceramic provides electrical insulation, stores heat and releases it evenly to the contact surface. The casing of fire-aluminized steel or stainless steel sheet metal provides mechanical protection and the necessary contact pressure.

Higher operating temperature and nearly double the watt density compared to mica — for extruders, injection molding cylinders and processes in the upper temperature range.
Even heat without hotspots
The ceramic blocks act as heat storage and distributor: temperature fluctuations are dampened and heat is released evenly to the contact surface.
Mechanically & chemically robust
The dimensionally stable ceramic body does not yield under clamping pressure, is vibration-resistant and resistant to oils, greases and many process chemicals.

Proper mounting is a prerequisite for the function, service life and operational safety of your heating system.
!Commissioning: soft-start recommended
We recommend commissioning ceramic band heaters with a soft-start sequence rather than at full power. Ceramic materials are sensitive to rapid temperature changes: a temperature rise that is too fast creates stresses in the ceramic structure that can lead to cracks or fracture.
- Start at reduced power and only move to full power once the heater has warmed through.
- Heat up slowly after extended downtime too — this also drives out condensed moisture.
Ceramic is brittle: it breaks under bending or impact loads where metallic heating elements would merely deform. Impact loading must therefore be avoided not only during mounting but also during ongoing operation — the ceramic can fracture at any time. During mounting, additionally observe: no impact tools, clean and flat contact surfaces, even clamping force — especially with segment heaters — and do not sharply bend connection leads.

Ring heater

No. We manufacture ceramic band heaters from a quantity of one in our own production facility in Kronstorf — since 1987. Whether a single replacement for an extruder barrel or a series requirement: every heater is built to order to your dimensions.
Three basic designs: round for extruder barrels and pipelines, segmented for large diameters with easy assembly and disassembly, and flat for planar mounting surfaces such as platen presses. We implement bores and cutouts — for example for sensors or mounting brackets — to drawing.
The maximum operating temperature is 450 °C, the maximum surface loading is 6.5 W/cm². The ceramic elements act as heat storage and distributors: heat is transferred evenly to the contact surface, without hotspots.
When higher surface loading is required: ceramic band heaters tolerate up to 6.5 W/cm², while mica band heaters are designed for a guideline value of 3.5 W/cm². Ceramic also offers mechanical hardness, vibration resistance thanks to the form-fit embedded NiCr resistance wire, and chemical resistance to oils and greases. Mica, in turn, scores with a significantly lower overall height. If in doubt, we are happy to advise you on which design fits your application.
Yes, on request we supply ceramic band heaters with a temperature sensor and matching mounting bracket. This lets you monitor the heater itself and reliably protect it against overtemperature. For controlling the process temperature, we recommend an additional sensor in the barrel or tool — the heater reaches temperature faster than the material inside it. Simply state the position and sensor type in your inquiry.
Fixed leads, clamped connections or plug connections — depending on how often the heater needs to be removed and the ambient conditions. Additional options such as a heat conducting plate, thermal insulation or a cooling housing with mounting flange are also possible.
Yes. We measure your old part or work from the nameplate data and manufacture a matching replacement — even for products whose manufacturer no longer supplies them. You can send us the old part directly.
You send us the design, dimensions and electrical data, we check the sizing and clarify details directly with you. You then receive a quote; after ordering, we manufacture the heater in Kronstorf and deliver it fully tested.
